Site Plan
Your survey "Site Plan" is essential in determining everything regarding where you can build. The city will not issue a building permit for an addition without a site plan.
Find your survey Site Plan. It's probably in your files with other paperwork from when you purchased your home or refinanced.
Also contact your City's Zoning Department to determine required setbacks from property lines, easements etc. They usually will be able to tell you by phone what your required setbacks are for your property.
